Be an Independent Stylist: Get the Right Tools

We know that beauty school does not teach us everything we need to know when it comes to running a successful beauty business. Beauty school teaches us how to pass the state board but leaves out so many key parts.

They do not teach us about running a business, managing a team, or even the platforms to use when running your own salon. Below are some key areas to help you with being an Independent Stylist.

#1 How To Market Your Business

Every business needs marketing in place to gain our ideal clients. When it comes to marketing for your beauty business tackle one thing at a time and give yourself room to grow. It is not going to happen overnight but with constant effort, you can start slaying sooner than later.

Create your social platforms and start showing up… we just have to start

We live in the social media world; our audience is on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc., spending hours browsing content. It is time to show off your skills.

Try to get in the habit of taking before and after photos of your client's hair. You can use these photos to show a transformation that you provided for your clients. Sharing tips and tricks on your social platform is another great way to get people engaged and learning from you. You want to show the world how talented you are! You want them to imagine sitting in your chair and loving you and their hair.

Create promotional flyers and printables

Another way to promote your business is to create some promotional flyers, posters, and business cards. This is STILL a great option for getting the word out. There are places that still allow you to pin up flyers. This is another way to get your business noticed by more people in your local community, social media is great but good old-fashioned print is too!

#2 Customer Management

Make it easy for your customers to book their appointments. Since we live in a digital world, online booking is something that I highly recommend and we use it daily in my salon.

  • Have a booking platform that will allow your customers to book when they want to. We use Vagaro and love it! It allows us to take payments, and send reminders, and it is easy to use for us as well as the customer.

#3 Keep Track Of Your Finances

One of the most important things when running your own beauty business is keeping track of your finances. You want to keep accurate records of everything. You can invest in accounting software like QuickBooks, Freshbooks or Xero. You may also want to invest in an accountant to keep track of all this for you.

#4 Supplies & Equipment

In order to be successful in the salon business, you need to make sure that you have everything you need in order to deliver a quality service. That is why it is important to know how to order supplies and equipment.

There are many ways that a salon owner can order supplies and equipment. You can buy them from wholesalers, or from online stores like Amazon, or even from your local beauty supply store. The best thing about ordering supplies and equipment online is that there are many websites out there that will offer discounts on items for their customers.

There are no limits when running your own Independent Stylist Business, have fun with it!
